Weird Passion Flakies and chip of the year?

Weird Passion Flakies

My blogging routine is lacking, but once a month still counts right?

I came across new ‘Limited Edition’ Passion Flakies during a routine grocery trip and obviously had to try them. Apple-Cinnamon and Pumpkin Spice.

20161028_185552

I normally think if pies when I think of these flavours and having them as flaked pastry just doesn’t work for me. I’m not a huge fan of anything pumpkin flavoured and knew it immediately as I took my first bite. The apple-cinnamon was only slightly better, but it seems to taste more artificial than it should be.

Chip of the year?

I thought the Chalet Sauce chips earlier this year couldn’t be toppled. I was wrong. After having my parcels delivered to the wrong post office again, I stumbled into the Valu-Mart and noticed a few new flavours of their World of Flavours chips: Thai Curry and Turkey Stuffing.

20161101_172008 20161101_172026

Naturally, I bought them. I don’t think I’ve ever had Thai Curry in its non-chip form before but this chip is surprisingly good. It has a very small hint of curry mixed in with a refreshing lime-like taste. It was well liked at work too.

The Turkey Stuffing one was okay. I won’t complain about the accuracy like I do with other chip brands, President’s Choice seem to know how to do it right. I just don’t think it works well as a chip.

Boardgames

I’ve played a handful of new (to me) boardgames in the past month and I’ll go through them all in the next post.

Lay’s World Favourites & Swiss Chalet

Just for completion sake, the 3 flavours from the World Favourite’s contest:Thailand (Thai Sweet Chili), United Kingdom (Cheese & Onion), and Canada (Bacon Poutine). I thought I had a picture of them but I can’t find it.

Thai Sweet Chili was interesting, it was not overly spicy and had a bit of sweetness to it. Personally I’ve never eaten any Thai food so I don’t know how to really compare it.

Cheese & Onion was probably the best flavour out of the 3, it tastes like exactly what it was advertising.

As always, I am disappointed by the poutine flavouring, nobody ever gets it right, not even the king of chip seasoning Ruffles. Bacon Poutine had a taste but it definitely wasn’t bacon poutine. Is bacon poutine really quintessentially the Canadian flavour? Poutine by itself is our national dish, no need to add bacon to it.

A few weeks later, Lays decided to release something that would have been a much better presentation of Canada.

A Swiss Chalet exclusive (until November 1 2016), I am thankful that my sister tipped me off about these when these were released because they sold out quickly. It tastes almost exactly like the sauce, at least how I remember it. A bit of savoury mixed with a small amount of sweet in a chip, it’s almost perfect. I don’t know how else to describe it but this is hands down the best of the new flavours Lays has released in years.

Lay’s Passport to Flavor

I picked up the 4 new Lay’s flavors on my annual trip down to Columbus which coincides with the release of the new chips.

Chinese Szechuan Chicken, Indian Tikka Masala, Brazilian Picanha, Greek Tzatziki

Greek Tzatziki

In Canada, we had the tzatziki flavour before in a kettle cooked chip, so the taste was not new. However, with the wavy chips, something changed. It actually works a bit better as a wavy chip than a kettle chip.

Brazilian Picanha

Ruffles has a steak flavoured chip available here and I wasn’t able to pinpoint what it was supposed to taste like. Ruffles usually gets the flavour right, especially since they specialize in wavy chips and can load the ridges with flavour. But for the steak flavour they had, I just wasn’t tasting it. The same goes for the Brazilian Picanha chips.

Indian Tikka Masala

I don’t think I’ve ever tried the real thing. Indian food is known for its use of spices and this one was no different. It was an interesting taste, a lot stronger than what I had anticipated. Out of the 4, this one is the most flavorful chip.

Chinese Szechuan Chicken

Another chip where I haven’t tried the real thing to compare to. There was a bit of a kick to this chip, which is always welcome but I’m not a fan of spicy.

The next post will be the Canadian World of Flavours chips, and a bonus flavour that came out this week that should have been the Canadian flavour.

Ohio Trip

Long time no post, I’ll have a detailed blog post about the lack of updates. In short, addiction.

20160814_201617

Starting with salt, Lays has their world of flavors contest earlier this year and these were the 4 winners in the states. Memphis BBQ is a new flavour for me so I picked it up. The taco one is an oldie.

20160814_201512

Now to sweets, the big draw for the weekend was the Swedish Fish Oreos. Everything else was picked off the shelf if I haven’t tried it before.

20160814_201221

I’m impressed by the amount of Gatorade I haven’t tried yet. Didn’t go too crazy on the drinks this time around. The Iced Vanilla Java Mio Energy is probably the best out of the bunch.

Much longer post will be out soon with some reviews of the stuff I’ve tried.

Here’s a picture of the top half of our combined haul in the trunk coming back.

Chip update

It’s been a while, things have been busy for me. Lays released their Do Us a Flavour chips in Canada: Butter Chicken, Montreal Smoked Meat, PEI Scalloped Potatoes, Cowboy BBQ Beans.

Picked up at a Wal-Mart though they were available in almost every major store I went to.

From left to right on my shopping cart:

PEI Scalloped Potatoes

I have something against potato flavoured potato chips. There’s really nothing you’re adding or taking away by making it a chip. In this case, it’s pretty much just cheese flavoured.

Montreal Smoked Meat

The flavour is actually the whole sandwich, not just the meat. It was very similar to the sandwich, I can taste a hint of pickle in addition to the spices.

Butter Chicken

Quite a buttery taste but heavier on the spices. I haven’t had butter chicken before so I’m unsure of the taste accuracy.

Cowboy BBQ Beans

The wavy chip actually makes the chip taste worse. I’m not sure what the intentions were but I couldn’t taste any BBQ in it.

Doritos Collisions (Habanero + Guacamole)

20150908_175131

I have a beef with these Doritos. The bag portrays an even split between the two flavors. In each of the 3 bags I purchased, the ratio was roughly 70/30 in favour of the Habaneros. The habanero chips weren’t too spicy and the guacamole chips were okay. The main complain is the unevenness of it.

But this gives me an idea….

IMG_20150825_093411

Lays had a Grilled Cheese and Ketchup flavour 2 years ago which tasted nothing like what I ate for a lot of my undergrad. If Lays combined two different chips (1:1 ratio!) into the bag, it might actually work out for them!

Do Us A Flavor Round 2

IMG_20150814_093455

Finally had time to do the last two flavors and here are my thoughts.

West Coast Truffle Fries

I remembered having truffle fries at a restaurant once but I couldn’t remember what it tasted like. After trying the chips, there’s a hint of sour cream/onion taste but less of the sour cream and more so on the onion.

Southern Biscuits and Gravy

Never really had biscuits and gravy so I’m also going in blind for these. The taste was a bit mild, there’s a hint of gravy flavor but then the chip takes over.

My Rankings

  1. Greektown Gyro
  2. Truffle Fries
  3. New York Reuben
  4. Biscuits and Gravy

Bonus Chips

One of my colleagues at work was visiting Buffalo and picked up some chips, Tops has pretty unique flavors and the one I sampled was much better than most of the Lays.

IMG_20150813_152151

Cheddar & Horseradish is not something I’d particularly enjoy but as the chip guy at the office I had to try one. I immediately smelled the horseradish as the bag was being passed around. The chip itself had a decent cheesy taste to it and the horseradish kicks in right after. It’s quite pungent and well done.

Coming up next

Lays Do Us A Flavour for the Canadian flavours.

Chips, Chips, & Chips!

I just got back from my trip to Columbus OH. Shout outs to Heroes and Games for hosting the annual OP Cup at their store. Whenever I go to the US, I always do a grocery run and load up on junk food you can only get south of the border. I only managed to pick up about $50 US this time around.

Pringles – Cheese Burger

IMG_20150810_094152-nopm-

I am finding these Food Truck flavors quite appetizing. They have familiar flavors that I know and they hit it spot on. The previous trip netted me some Kickin’ Chicken Taco Pringles and those had the familiar taco spices but I think chicken was only in the name for the rhyme. This time around I found the Cheese Burger flavor and, no surprise, it tastes like cheese burger. The taste was too evenly spread out but overall it was satisfying.

Lays – New York Reuben

IMG_20150811_135048

I’ll be honest, I haven’t tasted a Reuben sandwich before, at least not a proper one. And because of that, I didn’t know what to expect. The taste seemed like a complete mix of flavors that neutralized it completely. There’s a hint of the tangy-ness of the sauerkraut but that’s about it.

Lays – Kettle Cooked Greektown Gyro

IMG_20150811_134731

On the contrary to the Reuben, I’ve had many gyro pitas, I even had one this past weekend in Columbus. My expectations for this chip was low, expecting it to taste similar to the Kettle Cooked Tzatziki from last year’s Canadian DUAF contest.

I was wrong.

There’s a very strong lamb taste to the chip. It really does taste like gyro meat with a bit of helpings. This is currently at the top of list.

What’s Next?

Two US DUAF chips down, two to go. I will try the West Coast Truffle Fries and Southwest Biscuits and Gravy and report back having never tried either one ‘properly’.
